Chauvigny and Civaux
Perched on its spur, the upper town of Chauvigny stacks five castles, including the Bishops’ Castle, open for a free visit. Below, the Saint-Pierre church shows Romanesque capitals with astonishing figures. In Civaux, the Neolithic and early Christian site tells an even older story. For a curious date, that offers plenty to mix discoveries and conversation, away from the noise.
Saint-Savin and its wall paintings
The abbey of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its Romanesque wall paintings, the most important in France. You tilt your head back and fall silent: biblical scenes in ochre and grey-blue, expressive faces, refined details. A cultural date that happily extends along the Gartempe banks, around a shared crêpe or a drink in the sun.
Angles-sur-l’Anglin and Montmorillon
Listed among the most beautiful villages of France, Angles-sur-l’Anglin watches over the river from the top of its spur. The Jours d’Angles, old embroideries, are still handed down. In Montmorillon, the city of writing and its layered macarons deserve a gourmet detour. On Lyad, Poitevins share their weekend routes; it is up to you to pick someone to drive the small roads with.
